MITSUBISHI
have pulled out of the World Rally Championship with immediate
effect.
In a shock
announcement which has stunned the team's drivers - Alister
McRae, Francois Delecour and Jani Passonen - the team have
pledged to return to the WRC in 2004 with a more competitive
package.
According
to the new head of Mitsubishi's motorsport activities, Sven
Quandt, the manufacturer's engineering resources are currently
being restructured in Japan and Europe. More time is needed
to develop a competitive car capable of winning the World
Rally Championship.
It's
possible that the team will start developing a Mitsubishi
Colt for the WRC but as yet no decision has been made to this
effect. Between now and 2004, Mitsubishi will enter selected
events as part of the development programme.
